"Each one of these bands brought its own unique spin to this burgeoning sound and released debut albums that were landmarks in defining the scene and driving it forward: The Greyboy Allstars’ West Coast Boogaloo in 1994, The New Mastersounds’ Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds in 2001 and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings' Dap Dippin'. At the heart of it, these musicians wanted to play like their heroes, make music that they loved, and add something cool to the musical conversation they were having between their friends and peers.
